Having Tasted

1 PBuffeteter 2:1-3 “1Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” NKJV

Our church choir sang the great Larnelle Harris song “Were It Not For Grace” this morning.  You could sense God’s moving and an awareness of the truth of the lyrics.  Larnelle wrote these words:

Time measured out my days
Life carried me along
In my soul I yearned to follow God
But knew I’d never be so strong
I looked hard at this world
To learn how heaven could be gained
Just to end where I began
Where human effort is all in vain
Were it not for grace
I can tell you where I’d be
Wandering down some pointless road to nowhere
With my salvation up to me
I know how that would go
The battles I would face
Forever running but losing this race
Were it not for grace
So here is all my praise
Expressed with all my heart
Offered to the Friend who took my place
And ran a course I could not start
And when He saw in full
Just how much His would cost
He still went the final mile between me and heaven
So I would not be lost
Repeat Chorus
Forever running but losing this race
Were it not for grace

I know with certainty were my destiny would have been, had the Holy Spirit of God not drawn me to Him – Hell.  The lyrics says “Where human effort is all in vain”.  So true, many people think by being 51% good, it would tip the scales of justice into their favor.  The problem is who is evaluating the good.  If it’s between us, you might have a chance.  But God’s word has stated that there is none good, no not one.  What we consider to be good, he considers being as filthy rags.

“Sola Scriptura” (Scripture Alone); “Sola Gratia” (Grace Alone); “Sola Fide” (Faith Alone); “Solus Christus” (Christ Alone); and “Soli Deo Gloria” (To God Alone Be Glory) are called the Five Sola’s.  I believe these statements to be true.  Knowing how my life was before salvation and what I have seen God do in my life after salvation, I can only settle on a God-centered, not man-centered theology.  I am by nature; to wicked, to inconsistent, to untrue, to anything to rely on what I can do to get me to Heaven.  I must have my trust in Christ Alone.  Sola gratia – is the Latin term meaning grace alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 states, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”  This is what Larnelle wrote and sung about.

I thought of the verses Peter wrote to the churches of the Roman Empire.  He says if you are a believer there will be evidence of that salvation, not just saying and living as you did before, but your life will be changed to be like Jesus.  My life was changed and is continuing to change, not because of what I have done, but what He has done.  I have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
