“9 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 18:9-14 NASB
As I read this passage, I see a principle that Jesus gave to us; we as fellow humans are not to elevate our opinion of ourselves above others. We are to be humble and grateful. My question would be why should we think we are superior over someone else? I suggest that all that we have, all that we have done/will do, all of our talents/abilities, our appearance, our income, where we were born, when we were born, to whom we were born, was originated with God. Everything began with Him.
Therefore, I don’t understand people who think they are better than someone else. I call them “elitist”. Here is one definition that I found for elitist: 1. A person who believes that they are superior to others (and thus deserve favored status) because of their intellect, social status, wealth, or other factors. Other words to describe this person would be: prideful, arrogant, superior, snobs, self-important.
There are five areas of elitism that I would like to discuss: political, academic, racial, financial, and spiritual.
The other day, I heard a politician say that he thought that any other politician who disagrees with him should be punished! In America, we should be punished for having a different thought? I would expect to hear that from a Stalinist Russia, but not here. I understand we have a variety of political thought in our country, and in the past the different parties would give and take on things to, on the surface, try to make America better. I have grown to believe that most of our elected officials, Democrats and Republican, have little regard for the common people of the United States and have great regard for their power to control and manipulate their constituents. They need to understand that, according to Romans 13:1, God has established the government and has control over it and them.
How smart are you? How much do you know? If you have an IQ above normal, who gave you the ability to learn the things you have learned? Who created the brain that sits inside your skull? In the Book of Job, God ask Job over sixty questions about the universe and how it was made. Job’s answer was “I will remain quite.” Can you answer those questions? God has given some people great intellect. He has created some people for us to be able to help. I have known some people with limited formal education, but had vast amounts of common sense and the ability to understand people. I want to be taught from both schools.
Currently in the United States, there is much unrest over racial issues. This is sad to me. Again, what control did we have in being given our race? In Christianity, there should be no division in our relationship with others. Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave or free, there is no male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” When we are in Christ, we are all sinners save by His grace. Again, this should humble us. Are there whites who hate blacks? Yes. Are there blacks who hate whites? Yes. Is there any race superior in God’s eyes, over another race? I don’t read it in the Bible. He has chosen Israel as His chosen people. Why? For His good pleasure. I think of an old children’s song we used to sing, “Jesus loves the little children of the world; red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight.” I think that is something that can be built upon.
13 “If I have despised the claim of my male or female slaves [servant]
When they filed a complaint against me,
14 What then could I do when God arises?
And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?
15 “Did not He who made me in the womb make him,
And the same one fashion us in the womb? Job 31:13-15 NASB
“The poor you will always have with you…” Rich people and poor people have been around forever. The middle class is relatively new. I have known people in each group and found there are elitist in each. I have known humble people in each group. People willing to share the fruit that God has provided to them and are overjoyed to do it. I believe we have a responsibility to help our fellow man. If you are wealthy, the government should not force you to give, it should come from within you. Many wealthy people have been generous in helping to fund hospitals, schools, libraries, etc. If you are poor and are able, you should be willing to work for your bread and water. Elitist will use their money, or lack of, as a weapon. Should it not be used as a tool? I think the church is a wonderful example of how working together, much can be accomplished for the cause of Christ.
As in our opening passage, there are those who are Pharisaical. We are to have the attitude of the tax collector, “God, be merciful to me, the sinner” In world religions, Christianity is exclusive. The Holy Bible teaches that only through Jesus Christ will you have eternal life. John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, the life; no one comes to the Father but though Me.” NASB I make no apology for this. This is God’s Word. Other religions say that they are the way. Who is right? It’s a matter of faith. I have placed my trust in God’s Word and believe it to be true.
Other categories could be listed and discussed, but it all comes back to one simple premise. What are we without God originating and providing the things we need for this life? Do you trust Him with your life?
What are your thoughts?
