Contactless

Have you noticed how prevalent this word has become in the last few weeks in advertising?   From drive thru restaurants to having a swimming pool installed to buying a car…all available without interacting with another human.

Oh, I understand the reason it started.  The pandemic has changed our world has we have know it.  Wearing face mask, social distancing, stay at home.  We are willing to do those things to not get sick or to cause others to get sick, but as this has carried on into multiple weeks, our national psyche is starting to rebel.   Our human spirit is starting to rebel.

I don’t think anyone’s fundamental motive has changed.  We still don’t want to get sick or to cause others to get sick, but we are also seeing authorities began to overreach from that goal and try to stop what is intrinsically within us; the God given right to be free and taking responsibility to make our own choices.

But I believe we were not created to  live separated, but to live with human touch and interaction!

“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Genesis 2:18 ESV

Isn’t it interesting that from the very beginning, God did not want us to be alone.  The way that the human being is created involves touching, holding hands, hugging, kissing, gathering together as a family, or as a community, working together, or to just enjoy being with someone.

But the trend is to try to get us to go opposite of the way we are created and that is to separate us and to isolate us.  I’m not just talking about just for a six week period, there are those that are advocating extending this separation for months.  But what would the result be from that action?  How would that effect our nation?  Our city? Our churches? Our families?  How would it effect you to live in isolation without human contact?

Those that know me, know one of my favorite illustrations from nature, is the way of wildebeest and the lioness.    The wildebeest travel in great herds

in the Serengeti.  And as with any herd there will be those who will be on the perimeter.  Often the young or weakened will move away from the main herd and separate themselves to eat some vegetation the others may have left.

What they don’t know is that there are hungry lions crouching in the tall grass waiting for one wildebeest to get ever closer and closer, until they are in range of a quick attack.  The lions will embed their sharp claws into the back hip of the wildebeest to bring it down.  Down to the ground where the wildebeest can not run from the attack.  Down to the ground where the wildebeest will be the meal for the lions.  This happens everyday.  I have said the wildebeest is the sliced bologna of the Serengeti .

I have seen people isolated from church and families and I’ve seen them attacked and brought down to the ground.  I don’t want to see a whole society, my society, brought down because of isolation.

24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.  Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV

I don’t know the outcome of the long term results of this social engineering and how all of this is intertwined in God’s plan.  But I just know, we are not made to live this way.

The Book of Hebrews tells us to stir up (as one who stokes cooling embers) to love and good works.  It tells us to meet together to encourage one another.  Why?  Because the Day is drawing near.  There is speculation of just what “the Day” means.  But could it be the day when Jesus finally appears?    The instructions in Hebrews tells us this is how we are to live!! Not defeated, but as people with hope.  People who trust in the Lord!  He who has taken care of all of our yesterdays and todays, and even our tomorrows is the One we can trust now!!

Do you remember the song, “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” written by Ira F. Stanphill?  The  verses says,

I don’t know about tomorrow;
I just live from day to day.
I don’t borrow from it’s sunshine
For it’s skies may turn to grey.

I don’t worry o’er the future,
For I know what Jesus said.
And today I’ll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

Every step is getting brighter
As the golden stairs I climb;
Every burden’s getting lighter,
Every cloud is silver-lined.

There the sun is always shining,
There no tear will dim the eye;
At the ending of the rainbow
Where the mountains touch the sky.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

I don’t know about tomorrow;
It may bring me poverty.
But the one who feeds the sparrow,
Is the one who stands by me.

And the path that is my portion
May be through the flame or flood;
But His presence goes before me
And I’m covered with His blood.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand…

Yes, many things about tomorrow I don’t seem to understand, but I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand…
